Phase 1: Gathering & Needs Assessment
(Oct. to Dec. 2018)

  • Completion of an inventory of all Indigenous-related spaces and needs on campus
  • Indigenous Services staff focus group held Sept. 25, 2018
  • Indigenous Postsecondary Education Council (IPEC) focus group held Sept. 27, 2018
  • Indigenous Faculty Advisory Council focus group held Oct. 1, 2018
  • Meeting specific to Indigenous Food and Medicine Garden held Oct. 23, 2018
  • Indigenous student focus groups met Oct. 31 and Nov. 5, 2018
  • Online survey for students, alumni, staff, faculty and community partners ran from Oct. 29 to Nov. 26, 2018

Phase 2: Synthesizing & Reporting
(Dec. 2018 to Jan. 2019)

This phase involved hiring a consultant to analyse and report on key findings, assembling an Indigenous Space Advisory Group to review key findings and finalizing recommendations to the Provost around creating a new space.

Phase 3: Architectural Planning & Community Engagement
(July 2019 to December 2020)

Architectural Planning and Community Engagement informally wrapped up in December 2020. Engagement continues on minor adjustments (finishes and colours, a/v infrastructure, etc.) but the final overall design has been approved.

Phase 4: Construction
(July 2021 to January 2022)

Engagement with the Indigenous Space Advisory Group will continue throughout the construction period as final decisions are made on room functions and amenities, material and colour selections, furnishings selections and procurement, and construction progress.

  4. Schematic Design - Winter 2019 - December 2020 (delays due to COVID-19)
  5. Design Development - Late December 2020 - February 2021
  6. Construction Document Development February 2021 - May 2021
  7. Tender and Award - mid May 2021 - end of June 2021
  8. Construction - July 2021 - January 2022
