Proposed functional needs

The following are proposed functional needs for the Indigenous Learning Space that came out of the various focus groups and the online survey (fall 2018):

  • A large multi-functional gathering space (for gatherings for 150-200 people that can be converted into open lounge student space when not used)
  • 1-2 bookable indoor classroom spaces (up to 40 people each)
  • 1 bookable outdoor classroom space
  • Virtual space with state of the art technology in at least 1 classroom and the large multi-functional gathering space
  • Sound proof for classroom
  • 4-6+ office spaces for key staff positions including Elders and student-leader offices
  • 1-2 meeting rooms for private tutoring and staff meetings (accommodates up to 10 people each)
  • 1 studio space (for Indigenous-specific programming)
  • An industrial size and grade kitchen (off of the multi-functional large space)
  • Land space for an outdoor garden
  • 1 outdoor ceremonial space with a sacred fire pit and covered arbour/pavilion – connected to the outdoor classroom.
  • 1 welcoming reception area for drop-in information
  • 1 storage space
  • Children’s play zone indoors and outdoors
  • 1-2 reserved parking spots for Elders
  • Smudge-friendly with proper ventilation and fire alarm system controls
  • Green building environmental sustainability features
  • Accessible (wheel chair friendly)
  • Natural lighting indoors
  • Security system, video surveillances and after hours access
  • The space must be overseen by an Indigenous unit and staffed by Indigenous people
